<http://viewer.zmags.com/publication/8406e42f#/8406e42f/14>Simulators are an integral part of the motorsports industry.  They enable testing in a variety of conditions and locations without having to venture outside the workshop, and can help drivers shave seconds off their lap times before even setting foot in a circuit's paddock.  They have been part of the wider automotive industry for decades, and have mainly been built around the principles of the [Stewart platform](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stewart_platform), or hexapod.  Such systems were the aerospace industry's simulation tool of choice for decades, before migrating slowly to the automotive industry.
